Long before Gav & Sav became a small home studio, it was simply two names spoken together.
Gav.
And Sav.
Like many childhood ideas, it began with curiosity. The two of them once imagined having a little brand of their own. There were no notebook covers yet. No pen wraps. No plans that reached much further than the wonderful confidence children often have when they believe almost anything is possible.
As they grew older, those early ideas quietly gave way to school, new interests, and life. The dream faded, but the name never did. It stayed with us.
Years later, when we found ourselves searching for a name that felt personal, familiar, and close to home, it was waiting for us.
Gav & Sav.
Some names are chosen. Others quietly choose you.
Looking back, it feels as though this one had been patiently waiting for its time.
By then, life had already taken us somewhere we never expected. Crafting became more than a hobby.
It became a place to rest tired hands, a place to slow down, and a place where difficult seasons became a little gentler to carry.
Our first fountain pen wrap was never meant to become the beginning of a business.
It was made as a gift, one careful stitch after another.
Like so many things since, it simply led us to the next small step. Then another. And another.
Before long, that first wrap quietly found its way into the local fountain pen community. Long before we truly became part of that world ourselves, our work had already arrived there first.
The conversations that followed gradually opened a door we never expected to walk through. What began with a single handmade wrap slowly became friendships, encouragement, and a community that welcomed us with far more kindness than we could ever have imagined.
Some of our happiest memories still come from those early years—meeting the people whose hands had first held our work, sharing conversations around pen meet tables, and then, before we knew it, finding ourselves at our very first Manila Pen Show.
One memory, in particular, still makes us smile.
When we were invited to create our very first wrap made exclusively for the Manila Pen Show.
At the time, it simply felt like another opportunity to make something with care. Looking back now, it quietly became one of those moments that reminded us we had become part of a community we had first entered through our work.
Over the years, Gav & Sav has reached homes far beyond the Philippines. That still amazes us. Yet no matter where one of our notebook covers or pen wraps eventually travels, every piece still begins in much the same way.
At home.
Around a worktable.
Surrounded by fabrics waiting to find one another. With sketches on recycled paper, pins scattered nearby, and the occasional curious cat wandering through. Sometimes with quiet conversation. Sometimes with comfortable silence. Always with the hope that someone, somewhere, will one day enjoy using what we have made.
Perhaps that’s why Made Close to Home still feels like the truest way to describe our work. It isn’t only about where something is sewn. It’s about how it is made—with familiar hands, with time, with care, and with stories slowly finding their place alongside every stitch.
Home has never limited how far our work can travel.
It has simply reminded us where every piece begins.
And somehow, we hope it always will.
